Petrino Won’t Visit Top Recruit After ‘Bump’

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino won’t make an in-home visit with Springfield (Mo.) Hillcrest wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham tonight, taking a “proactive” step to avoid any potential NCAA recruiting violations.

The Razorbacks issued a statement Wednesday night after Beckham’s high school coach, John Beckham, told CBSSports.com Petrino had called off a trip to visit the nation’s top high school prospect because a “situation occurred.”

Beckham told CBSSports.com Petrino inadvertently bumped into Green-Beckham when both were in San Antonio earlier this month. Arkansas is not permitted to comment on prospective student-athletes, but issued a statement regarding the bump Wednesday.

“No violation has occurred and we are taking proactive steps we feel necessary to avoid any risk of one,” Arkansas’ statement said. Coaches are allowed one in-person visit with prospects during contact periods, although the exact date of the Petrino/Green-Beckham bump is not known.

Petrino was in San Antonio for the American Football Coaches Association Convention, while Green-Beckham was participating in the U.S. Army All-Star Game. The all-star game was played Jan. 7, while the coaching convention was held Jan. 8-11.

Green-Beckham took an official visit to Arkansas last weekend and is considering the Razorbacks, Missouri and Texas. He will announce his decision during ESPNU’s National Signing Day coverage Feb. 1.
