Moriah Houston, a senior at Pine Bluff High School, and Jordan Sims, a junior at Dollarway High School, will participate in the Civil War to Civil Rights Social Conscience Gathering.
The event will be held Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20-21, at Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site of the National Park Service.
The two students are members of the Interested Citizens for Voter Registration Pen or Pencil group mentoring program. They will serve on a panel with students from Central High School to discuss social issues affecting young people in the state and nation.
Houston will address the importance of voting and Sims will discuss education.
Andrew Young, former ambassador, congressman, mayor, and key civil rights strategist for Civil and Voting Rights Acts, is scheduled to be the keynote speaker for the opening of the Social Conscience Gathering.
“Pen or Pencil empowers youth through a cultural based mentoring methodology which promotes consciousness-raising, skill-building and leadership development particularly, but not exclusively, to uplifting the contributions of African-Americans in American history,” a spokesman said.
