At a special called meeting Tuesday evening, the Pine Bluff School Board voted to create an assistant superintendent’s position and approve summer school staff.
Newly appointed interim superintendent Linda Watson recommended the assistant superintendent for learning services’ position.
“Our school district has been designated in year two district-wide alert for 2011,” Watson said. “There is no word yet for this year. We need a person to work with the schools on school improvement, common core and student achievement and this will be the assistant superintendent for learning services. I am asking for board approval of this new position.”
Board member Ellen Nichol asked Watson to clarify the number of positions she was trying to fill and what the duties of each position would be.
“There are two vacancies,” Watson said. “We have an assistant superintendent for secondary education and a deputy superintendent. I am revising the job descriptions with one of these positions for secondary and one for primary. I believe that currently the deputy superintendent is listed as primary and the assistant superintendent is secondary. I will request that all applicants for the positions have K-12 certification. Then I can determine who goes in which position.”

In other business, the board approved hiring summer school staff.
“Will addendums to their contracts be given to these people for their summer school work?” board secretary Freddie M. Johnson asked.
Watson said summer school started Monday and the district would give teachers the contracts that they need to have.
