A Pine Bluff man was arrested April 5 after allegedly hitting a woman in the face.
Marcus Shelton, 32, was arrested after officers were dispatched at about 6 p.m. to the 300 block of West 24th Avenue on a disturbance call. According to the police affidavit, the officers spoke with the woman who said that she and Shelton had gone fishing in DeWitt and they had gotten into an argument.
Shelton asked to go to a relative’s house, and the victim said she asked him to stay there until he sobered up, at which point Shelter reportedly told her he didn’t have to go anywhere and started hitting her in the face. The victim said Shelton also ripped her shirt and pulled her hair during the fight, according to the affidavit. The officers reported seeing scratches on the victim’s chest and bruises on her face.
The officers ran Shelton’s name through the system and discovered the victim had a protection order against him. When the officers attempted to arrest Shelton, who was also at the residence, he allegedly struggled with the officers, who called for backup before eventually being able to place him under arrest.
In a court appearance Thursday, Jefferson County District Court Judge Kim Bridgforth ruled prosecutors have probable case to charge Shelton with second-offense third-degree domestic battery, set a $50,000 unsecured bond for Shelton, ordered him to have no contact with the victim until the case is settled, appointed the Public Defender’s office to defend him and told him to return to court June 7.
