Parents of Trayvon Martin to speak in LR

LITTLE ROCK — The parents of Trayvon Martin are scheduled to attend the annual conference of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives at Little Rock next week, the organization said Monday.

NOBLE said Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton will speak at its Civil Rights Awards Breakfast June 24 to express appreciation to the group as one of the first to offer guidance and support following the February shooting death of their son in a gated community Sanford, Fla. George Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder in the death.

Former Little Rock Mayor Lottie Shackelford, the first woman elected to that office, will be the keynote speaker for the awards breakfast.

Also during the event, the organization will honor former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Jocelyn Elders and former NFL star Keith Jackson, founder of P.A.R.K. (Positive Atmosphere Reaches Kids) for at-risk students, as well as the legacy of the Little Rock Nine and civil rights pioneer William “Sonny” Walker.

The breakfast is part of NOBLE’s 36th Annual Conference and Exhibition, which will convene Saturday and run through July 25 at the Peabody Hotel.
