OPINION | Letter to the Editor: Why Live in This City?

Tune out station

Editor, The Commercial:

There is a radio network in Pine Bluff that makes it a priority to intercede on every local organization, including the School Boards, Police and Fire Departments, Sheriff’s Office, City Council, Quorum Court, UAPB and SEARK.

This network employs a radio personality that resorts to daily bullying and degrading of individuals and businesses. I constantly hear statements like, “The city is rapidly dying, people are leaving Pine Bluff, or they don’t want to stay here.” These statements amount to “biting the hand that feeds them.”

Radio stations should report the news, weather, sports and play music instead of talking about individuals’ body images, what they’re eating, what they wear and their choice of hairstyles.

There are also negative comments about certain pastors, religious organizations and how individuals choose to worship. Repeatedly using the phrase “in my opinion” is not an excuse for the negative dialog that follows.

People who choose to run for public office are being publicly ostracized when the radio personality doesn’t want them to be successful in their bid for their seats. Conversely, the candidates they approve of or support are being lifted up. This behavior should stop!

When a person wins an election, it is often said that the person was elected because of their relatives, church affiliation or sorority/fraternity associations. This particular radio personality also says “Signs don’t vote.” Radios don’t vote either, but signs do make people aware.

Radio stations rely on their advertisements. Therefore, when a person or business is constantly being put down, advertisements on that station are not being purchased. “Pine Bluff, we can do better; this radio network is not our God!”

Let the citizens make their own decisions without being brainwashed. Stay out of the elections and debates. It is not fair for a radio network to promote their desired outcome of an election, especially when it is done in a negative fashion.

This radio personality has also shown insensitivity to the LGBTQ+ community by making statements such as, “Happy as a Sissy in Boy’s Town!”

It’s sad that a person can’t live in our city and be content at the same time. Some of this negative energy is being leaked to other cities and states, which sheds a negative light on Pine Bluff. Every time someone speaks negatively about our city, that negativity is stirred and festers in our community, among our friends and relatives. It would be nice to live in a city where derogatory statements are not routinely aired on the radio. All listeners are important!

The personal attacks are ridiculous and childish! You can choose to live in Pine Bluff, or leave! It’s that simple. This has to stop now!
