Detention illegal
Editor, The Commercial:
The Trump administration’s illegal detention of Mahmoud Khalil is a direct attack on constitutional rights and the rule of law.
Khalil, a legal U.S. resident and student protester, was wrongfully arrested without charge and is now being held in violation of his due process rights. This brazen abuse of power sets a dangerous precedent that should alarm anyone who believes in democracy.
The right to protest is fundamental to American freedom. Yet, under President Trump, we are witnessing the unlawful detention of individuals simply for speaking out. Detaining peaceful demonstrators without charges is the hallmark of authoritarian regimes, not a nation that claims to uphold justice.

Regardless of one’s stance on the protests themselves, we should all agree that legal residents cannot be stripped of their rights and held indefinitely without due process. This is not about partisanship — it is about protecting the core freedoms that define America. If we allow this kind of unconstitutional overreach to go unchecked, no one’s rights will be safe.
We must demand accountability and reject the Trump administration’s blatant disregard for the law before these abuses become the norm.
