Answering the call
Editor, The Commercial:
As sheriff of Jefferson County and on behalf of the dedicated men and women of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, I extend my deepest appreciation to the unsung heroes behind the headset — our 911 dispatchers at the Metropolitan Emergency Communication Association (MECA).
During National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, we proudly recognize and honor the critical role these professionals play in emergency response. MECA dispatchers are the lifeline between those in distress and the first responders who are called to serve. Their voices, often the first heard in a crisis, offer calm amidst chaos, reassurance in times of uncertainty, and clarity when seconds can mean the difference between life and death.
These men and women demonstrate unwavering commitment, resilience, and professionalism 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Whether coordinating emergency responses, providing critical instructions, or managing high-stress situations with grace, our MECA dispatchers are truly the heartbeat of public safety operations in Jefferson County.
Independent reporting for Pine Bluff & Jefferson County since 1879.
While their work is often unseen, its impact is immeasurable. This week, and every week, we thank our MECA 911 dispatchers for their tireless service, sacrifice, and dedication to keeping our communities safe.
We are proud to stand beside you — and behind you — in every emergency call you answer.

Jefferson County Sheriff
