OPINION | LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Mayor Washington did a good job and will be missed

Irene Holcomb

Mayor unified PB

Editor, The Commercial:

Mayor Shirley Washington gave her heart and soul to the city of Pine Bluff. She also gave her time, talent and personal resources to make the city better.

Many politicians get branded as “do nothing” by people who oppose them. Mayor Washington was unfairly targeted. Some of the tangible projects completed under her administration are the Carl A. Redus Jr. Aquatics Center, the Kevin D. Collins Center, the Pine Bluff Boys and Girls Club, and the Opportunity House. There are many others.

Her aesthetic pursuits, such as planting flowers, shrubs, and combating litter were done with her bare hands. She was visible around town picking up trash and planting flowers and shrubs.

She also supported community activities ranging from baby showers, church activities, funerals, and reading to students in the public schools.

The Mayor is passionate about education of all citizens across all subjects. She is a multi-talented, humble person. Being around her is like taking a crash course in leadership and humility.

Mayor Washington attempted to unite Pine Bluff. City employees received more raises and bonuses during her administration. Because of Saracen Casino and other factors, the city budget was increased. She was criticized for supporting the casino.

The City Council was more unified because of her ability to respect those who opposed her views. The Arkansas State Municipal League respects the Mayor’s administration. There were fewer lawsuits under the Mayor’s administration.

Mayor Washington is leaving Pine Bluff with a balanced budget and a surplus. She has opened the door for the next administration. The Mayor has been a good steward of the taxpayers’ funds.

Congratulations to the next administration! You have my well wishes and support. My only request is “good governance.” Pine Bluff will be my home until I transition to my heavenly home. God bless Pine Bluff.

Council Member Emerita,

Irene Holcomb,
