OPINION | LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Hear students’ voices

Jesse Turner

Listen to students

Editor, The Commercial:

I want to clarify that I am not trying to dictate what you should print or cover, but I have a heartfelt plea for everyone. Reducing gun violence among our youth isn’t about bouncy houses, food, games or similar distractions. It’s about educating them and listening to their voices. This has been my sincere appeal to all for decades.

Therefore, it’s heartbreaking to see recent headlines like “14-Year-Old Injured in Gun Incident” and “Teen Arrested in Fatal Shooting.” These stories highlight a pressing issue that many young people face today. However, there is a silver lining — students in the Watson Chapel and Pine Bluff school districts are stepping up! On the Day of National Concern, they pledge to resolve conflicts peacefully instead of with violence.

Instead of letting negativity dominate, these bright scholars are engaging in activities like football, and connecting with their community through shared interests. They have also courageously expressed their feelings and experiences related to gun violence through writing, which serves as a powerful form of therapy, is why Watson Chapel High School was chosen for the essay competition. https://vimeo.com/732773300.

Yet, as of Oct. 28, their voices remain unheard. It’s crucial that we prioritize their stories and perspectives. Let’s champion the creativity and resilience of our youth and ensure that the heartfelt thoughts of these students find their way into the spotlight, where they belong. Everyone has a role to play in fostering a brighter, more peaceful future!
