Police are lacking
Editor, The Commercial,
I am writing to raise concerns about fairness, transparency and professionalism in how criminal matters are handled in Pine Bluff, particularly by the Pine Bluff Police Department and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
There is a growing perception among residents that accountability is not always applied consistently, especially when certain individuals are involved. Whether perception or reality, this concern alone deserves public attention.
Independent reporting for Pine Bluff & Jefferson County since 1879.
An incident that occured March 3 further heightened these concerns. Law enforcement communicated about the situation to my family. However, to my knowledge, no formal report was created. This raises important questions about documentation and accountability.
In my own experience, I went to the police station to file a report regarding a serious matter. The environment was loud and unprofessional. On or about March 5, multiple officers were engaged in a phone conversation that, from what I could hear, involved references to someone they called “Black Jesus,” while I was attempting to report my concern. Due to the noise, I had to repeat myself several times to be understood. The situation did not reflect the level of professionalism the public expects.
Additionally, I have been vocal about candidates for public office by referencing their own public statements and comparing them with verifiable facts. As a result, I have experienced attempts by members of the public to report me to my employer in an effort to have me disciplined or terminated. This type of response to civic engagement is concerning and has no place in a democratic society.
I will continue to speak out. Pine Bluff deserves transparency, professionalism and equal accountability for all.
