Change coming
Editor, The Commercial:
To the community I am honored to serve — thank you.
Thank you for your trust. Thank you for your belief in the possibility of better. And most importantly, thank you for standing with our students, because they are — and must always remain — the heart of every decision we make.
Serving as your School Board President is not just a title; it is a responsibility I carry with deep humility and unwavering commitment. My focus is clear and unshakable: Academic excellence, accountability, transparency and a community-driven approach to education. These are not just words — they are the foundation upon which we will rebuild, restore and reimagine the future of our school district.
Independent reporting for Pine Bluff & Jefferson County since 1879.
We all see where we are today. We feel it. We hear it. And we know it did not happen overnight. Because of that truth, we must also accept another: Real, lasting, student-centered change will not happen overnight either. But let me be equally clear — change is coming, and it will be built on purpose, discipline and unity.
I am proud to stand alongside my colleagues — the other members of the Board of Directors — who have also been entrusted by this community to lead. While we may come from different perspectives, we share a common responsibility to put students first and to govern with integrity. Together, we must hold ourselves accountable, operate with transparency and make decisions that reflect the best interests of every child in this district.
I am calling on parents, grandparents, educators, faith leaders and community stakeholders to step forward. Get involved. Set appointments with building leaders. Show up. Speak up. Partner with us. Because when the community is present, engaged and united, our schools become stronger — and our students become unstoppable.
This work will not always be easy. It will require hard conversations, difficult decisions and a commitment to accountability at every level.
As my mother, the late Deloris Blunt Robertson-Lovell, often reminded me, “The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.” That truth resonates now more than ever. The work ahead may test us, but the reward — a stronger school system, empowered students and a thriving community — will be worth every sacrifice.
Let us move forward together — with clarity, with courage and with a shared commitment to putting students first.
The future of our district is not written by one person, or one board. It is written by all of us.

Board president, Pine Bluff School District
