OPINION | LETTER TO THE EDITOR: In observance of Juneteenth

Lafayette Woods Jr.

Spirit of freedom

Editor, The Commercial:

In observance of Juneteenth, also known as “Freedom Day,” I encourage all citizens of Jefferson County to pause and reflect on the significance of this historic moment in American history.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to ensure the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation and to deliver long-overdue freedom to the last enslaved African Americans. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued two years earlier, it was not until this date that its promise was fully realized across our nation.

This day is not only a celebration of freedom, but a reminder of the enduring struggle for justice, equity and unity. It serves as a testament to the resilience and strength of those who endured generations of oppression, and it inspires us to continue working toward a more inclusive and equitable society for all.

As your sheriff, I remain committed to upholding the values of dignity, respect and fairness. Public safety cannot exist without public trust, and trust is built on mutual understanding, accountability, and a recognition of our shared humanity and history.

On behalf of the men and women of the Jefferson County sheriff’s office, I extend heartfelt wishes for a reflective, safe and empowering Juneteenth. May we continue to learn from the past and stand together for a more just tomorrow.

Sheriff Lafayette Woods Jr.,

Jefferson County
