OPINION | KARL HANSEN: Enact a ‘Foreign Profits’ tax

Enact foreign tax

Editor, The Commercial:

I just got my Feb. 17th issue in which Kathryn Ann Edwards treats on funding Social Security.

Here’s information all should know. Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid were all designed to be funded by payroll taxes on AMERICAN jobs. When Mitt Romney with his “Bain Capital” began buying up small companies, then closing them while offshoring those jobs, the payroll taxes were no more.

The Congress enacted tax laws to accommodate the practice so it profited their campaign donors. The practice then became common in other corporations.

Instead of taxing those profits made by foreign, but American-owned corporations, we now have a few oligarchs who, in effect, control those sitting on their hands while a few deranged “revenge takers” are destroying our country’s agencies.

Just enact a “Foreign Profits” tax on American owned offshore manufacturing profits and direct those funds where they were originally designed to go, and the funding problem will be solved!

Next, stop the “Citizens United” ruling that enables the wholesale bribing of Congress. That would compel them to resume working for US, or go back home. The Congress has just agreed to the most incompetent and unlikely cabinet in history — and IF we survive that as a functioning government and country, we’ll have a chance to never again let it happen.
