An inmate at the Varner Unit died from an apparent suicide on Tuesday, according to a news release from the Arkansas Department of Corrections.
Staff at the Varner Unit observed inmate Skyland Harris hanging in a locked single-man cell. Correctional officers and medical staff were unable to detect a pulse. Harris was pronounced dead at 12:54 p.m., according to the release.
The Arkansas State Police was immediately notified and responded to the unit. The agency will be conducting an investigation into the death. The Division of Correction will also be conducting an internal investigation into the death.
Harris, 33, was serving a 20-year sentence out of Pulaski County for aggravated robbery.
