The July 20 Slam Dunk the Junk Northside Cleanup was a success, according to a news release from the city of Pine Bluff.
The mayor’s office recently announced the first community cleanup as part of the Slam Dunk the Junk initiative to clean up the city.
The initiative brought together more than 30 volunteers from various community groups as well as residents, all united in their mission to enhance the beauty and cleanliness of the city.
“Volunteers worked diligently to clean up streets, parks and other public spaces, demonstrating their commitment to improving the quality of life in our community,” according to the release.
Mayor Shirley Washington expressed her gratitude for the community’s involvement.

“The success of this event highlights the strong community spirit here in Pine Bluff,” she said. “We have focused on creating a clean and healthy community for years. Despite the ongoing challenges due to litter and illegal dumping, community cleanups like this one help us address these issues. We are deeply thankful to all the volunteers and sponsors who made this cleanup possible. Together, we are making Pine Bluff a cleaner and more welcoming place for everyone.”
The Northside Cleanup targeted several key areas, including West Havis Avenue, North Birch Street, West Roane Avenue, West Whiteside Avenue, West Hill Avenue, North Willow Street, West Reed Avenue, North Short Cedar Street, West Short Reeker Avenue, Townsend Park Drive, West Remmel Avenue, North Palm Street, West Reeker Avenue, West Fluker Avenue, L.A. Prexy Davis Drive, Saracen Avenue, Henry Wilkins III Drive, North Cypress Street and North Hickory Street.
“These efforts aimed to raise awareness about the importance of proper waste disposal and the environmental impact of littering,” according to the release.
“The city of Pine Bluff extends thanks to all the volunteers, sponsors and partners who contributed to the success of Slam Dunk the Junk. Special appreciation goes to the Pine Bluff mayor’s office, Waste Management, the Pine Bluff/Jefferson County Clean and Beautiful Commission, Group Violence Intervention and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions Athletics.”
“We encourage all residents to continue their efforts in keeping Pine Bluff clean and green. Together, we can build a brighter, more beautiful future for our community,” according to the release.
