No. 6 Southern Nazarene hands UAM second straight loss

No. 6-ranked Southern Nazarene University broke a halftime tie and went on to post a 59-50 victory over the University of Arkansas at Monticello in men’s basketball Saturday at UAM’s Steelman Field House.

UAM (4-4, 0-2 Great American) lost its second straight game against a nationally ranked team and is down to its final game of a seven-game homestand, Tuesday against Harding University. The Boll Weevils were tied at 23-all at halftime and shot slightly better than the Crimson Storm in the second half (52.6% to 48%), but 15 turnovers for the game hindered the Weevils.

Ashton Price scored 14 points, Josh Smith had 12 and Giancarlo Valdez netted 11 for UAM. Valdez also pulled down nine rebounds.

Malik Edwards led Southern Nazarene with 16 points. Colby Henderson added 11 points and Tracy Godfrey Jr. had 10 in the win.

The Crimson Storm took advantage of 16 second-chance points to the Weevils’ four and shot 21 for 56 (37.5%) from the floor. They made 13 of 18 free throws.

UAM made 19 of 46 (41.3%) from the floor and went 8 for 11 at the foul line.

WOMEN: SOUTHERN NAZARENE 74, UAM 57

Earlier Saturday, Southern Nazarene made 14 three-point baskets on its way to the largest margin of victory over the Cotton Blossoms this season.

SNU went 14 for 26 (53.8%) from the perimeter. Halyn Browning came off the bench to make four threes, finishing with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Jordan Hoffman (15 points) and Jena Bay (nine points) each made three treys. Boston Berry added 10 points in the win.

The Crimson Storm (2-4, 2-0 Great American) shot 24 for 56 (42.9%) from the field and 12 for 14 at the foul line. UAM went 3 for 10 from the arc but shot 22 for 45 (48.9%) from the floor. The Blossoms made 10 of 15 free throws.

Brilynn Findley and Alyssa Batton each scored 16 points for UAM (5-3, 0-2), combining to make 8 of 8 free throws.

UAM will host Harding for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff Tuesday, with the men’s game to follow.
