New Dollarway School Board elects officers, selects lengths of terms

A newly formed Dollarway School Board chose officers and selected term limits on Thursday night, the first meeting since the Arkansas Department of Education dissolved a previous board in 2012 and assumed control.

Dollarway Superintendent Bobby Acklin welcomed an audience and board members. In order to avoid another state takeover, Acklin said that he will promote transparency and record-keeping.

“We are excited about tonight. Our district is whole again,” Acklin said. “I thank you in advance for supporting our kids.”

Charles Girley is representing Zone 1; Irene Murphy Zone 2, Billie Sanders Lankford Zone 3; Ruth Bogy Zone 4; Gene Stewart Zone 5; Dorothy Singleton Zone 6; and Cleollia Robinson in Zone 7.

Bogy was elected president, defeating Lankford by a 4-3 vote.

Lankford was elected vice president, defeating Girley by a 5-2 vote.

Stewart was elected secretary, defeating Girley by a 5-2 vote.

Girley was elected dispersing officer, defeating Singleton by a 6-1 vote.

Board members drew lots to select the length of their term.

Lankford and Girley each drew a one-year term. Singleton and Bogy each drew two-year terms. Stewart and Murphy each drew three-year terms. Robinson drew the long four-year term.

Acklin said he looks forward to the next meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Dollarway School District administration office. The accompanying agenda will be available on Friday.
