MLK panel slates 50 Forward: Youth Community Service Day

The Arkansas Martin Luther King Jr. Commission announces the 50 Acts of Service Initiative Wednesday, April 4.

The effort will commemorate the ninth anniversary of Youth Community Service Day and the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s death.

The commission is partnering with the Arkansas Department of Education to get youth involved by promoting the 50 Forward campaign to garner 50 hours of community service across the state Wednesday.

“During his lifetime, Dr. King sought to find the common ground on which people from all walks of life could join as equals to address important community issues,” DuShun Scarbrough, executive director of the AMLKC, said. “Service, he realized, was the great equalizer. As he once said, ‘Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.’”

On Wednesday, youth are asked to join the AMLKC as they honor King through service. They encourage youth to participate by doing the following:

• Develop a service project on your own with your class, school, organization or PTA;

• Focus on bridging racial and cultural divides in your project planning;

• Search and sign up on www.volunteerar.org for available volunteer service opportunities to complete on April 4;

• Participate in one hour of community service within your community to honor Dr. King’s legacy of service;

• Share photos using the hashtag #AMLKC50Forward.
