Missionary, singer to give book review at First Baptist

Mary Rader Pierce of Crossett will review her soon to be published book, “We Walked Where Jesus Walked,” at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 26, in the fellowship hall of First Baptist Church, 6501 Hazel St.

Pierce and her husband recently returned from their first trip to Israel. Information gathered while spending several weeks there will be shared in song and word, according to a news release.

Pierce was born the youngest of nine children to Ballard Rader, a mountain preacher and railroad worker, and Edith Barns Rader, a teacher at Rockcastle County, Kentucky.

With her husband, Greg Pierce, she spent seven years in mission work in an Alaskan village and eventually made 40 mission trips to a dozen foreign countries.

“Many times these mission endeavors have put them in great peril but every time the Lord has rescued them and brought them home safely,” according to the release.

“Mary’s love and gift for singing has carried her around the world several times. Greg has served as a Southern Baptist director of missions in three states — Virginia, Georgia and currently Southeast Arkansas — where Mary has always been his number one team member,” according to the release.

Their two sons are pastors and also have a passion for mission work. Mary often speaks about missions and is in demand as a singer, according to the release.

“Her sweet Kentucky mountain accent has charmed everyone who has met her. She is a direct descendent of Elizabeth Casteel of the Daniel Boone family, and also of Ambrose Powell of the Thomas Walker party that opened up the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky in 1750,” according to the release.

“In 2014, Kentucky’s former Gov. Steven Beshear conferred upon Mary the highest honor of the state, that of a Kentucky Colonel. She is the author of ‘I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes Unto the Hills’ and ‘I Shall Come Forth As Gold’,” according to the release.

Books and recordings will be available for sale at the review. Refreshments and door prizes will be furnished. The public is invited to attend.
