The Arkansas General Society War of 1812 held its March triannual meeting in Conway to review its accomplishments and plan activities for 2025.

Arkansas GSW 1812 has assisted the Arkansas United States Daughters of 1812 for years, both monetarily and physically. In appreciation, USD 1812 State President Sheila Beatty presented GSW 1812 State Treasurer/Secretary John Tatum and GSW 1812 State President EuGene Smith with certificates in recognition of their support, according to a news release.

Guests included representatives from the USD 1812 from Hot Springs Village and Little Rock, and speaker Vaughn Scribner, author and history professor at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.

Scribner’s presentation was from his book “Under Alien Skies.” This book illustrates how foreign soldiers’ negative perceptions of the American environment merged with harsh wartime realities to elicit physical, mental and emotional anguish, according to the release.

Some of the accomplishments during the last year include: Awarding of five ROTC awards in Arkansas; participation in the Annual Veterans’ Coat Drive with the Pine Bluff Triad groups (USD 1812, Daughters of Colonial Wars, Colonial Dames 17th Century); contribution for Toys for Tots; Wreathes Across America; representation at the USD 1812 State meeting; two Real Daughters headstone medallion dedication; Veterans’ Day ceremony at a veterans’ home in North Little Rock; State Memorial Day Ceremony; and assisting USD 1812 at the National Officers Luncheon.

The GSW 1812 members present voted to increase the donation for veterans’ coats and continue the support of community projects.

Beatty advised that help was needed in obtaining headstones from the Veterans Administration for Veterans of 1812 buried in Arkansas.

The General Society of the War of 1812 is a patriotic organization headquartered in Aberdeen, N.J. It was organized in 1814 at Baltimore.

The society admits men who are lineal descendants of American veterans who served on active federal duty during the War of 1812.

Prospective members must prove lineage from an ancestor who served in the War of 1812 (years 1811 to 1815), according to the release.
