Students in grades seven through 12 learned about two medical procedures during a virtual meeting of the Ivy Center for Education’s Future Medical Professionals/Club Scrub.
The club is an annual collaboration between the Ivy Center and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences South Central Regional campus, according to a news release.
During the February meeting, Dr. Tracey Lockhart, a first-year resident at UAMS South Central, presented a demonstration on the two different suturing techniques (absorbable and non-absorbable).
Lockhart provided an experience where the students were able to see how the different types of surgical stitchings are performed, as well as challenged them by asking relevant questions concerning each procedure.
The students were attentive to how different scenarios were provided to determine which stitching was needed. The session ended with a question-and-answer session where three of the students earned cash prizes.

Renisha Ward, UAMS Historically Black College and Universities education coordinator, and UAMS South Central recruiter Danielle Harris opened the February session with an introduction of Lockhart.
Ivy Center’s Future Medical Professionals Program/Club Scrub is made possible in part by a grant from the Pine Bluff Area Community Foundation.
“Scholars will receive their white coats during a virtual ceremony on April 22, 2021,” Mattie Collins, Ivy Center president, said.
