May 8 deadline set for applying to LIONS program

Incoming freshmen have the chance to acclimate to college life and earn college credits in the 2015 Learning Institute and Opportunities for New Students program at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

There are spaces for 300 incoming freshmen, according to Carolyn Mills, director of the program.

The deadline has been extended to Friday, May 8, to complete the admissions process to UAPB and the program. Students will receive a LIONS scholarship for tuition and fees and room and board. A book award of up to $500 is also available.

The program will be held Monday, July 6, through Friday, Aug. 7. Participants receive academic tutoring and attend college orientation; academic and professional workshops; and personal and social success seminars for making a successful transition to college life.

The program is sponsored by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Post-secondary Education, Strengthening Institutions, Title III, Part B, Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program and the Walton Family Foundation.

Applications are available at www.uapb.edu/lionsprogram and should be accompanied by admission to UAPB, campus housing and a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid for the summer session of the 2014-2015 academic year.
