Man sought in alleged theft of evidence arrested

One of two people who allegedly tampered with evidence following a reported attempted suicide Monday was arrested Tuesday and told police he did not do it.

Marcus Calhoun, 22, and Serenat Herron, 26, were being sought for allegedly taking a gun that was used in the incident and, according to a probable cause affidavit from Detective Steven Rucker, Calhoun was found hiding in an abandoned house in the Dollarway area.

According to a press release from police, when police arrived at the reported attempted suicide, they found a male with a gunshot wound to the head. That person was taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center and later died.

Rucker said in the affidavit that witnesses who were in the house told police they heard a shot and saw Calhoun run into the room, then run out before police arrived.

Another witness reportedly saw Calhoun pick up the gun and put it in his pocket.

Rucker said in the affidavit that when he interviewed Calhoun, he allegedly said he saw the gun on the floor but did not pick it up. He also allegedly said he had seen the gun earlier and wanted it.

According to the affidavit, one of the witnesses reportedly heard Calhoun tell someone that he had picked up the gun and put it under the porch, then Herron took the gun from there. Herron is still at large and anyone with information about her is asked to contact the detective division at 730-2090 or the dispatch center at 541-5300.

Calhoun allegedly told Rucker he ran because he had marijuana in his pocket.

Pine Bluff District Judge Kim Bridgforth set a $10,000 bond for Calhoun after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge him with theft of property and tampering with physical evidence.

Calhoun said he would hire his own attorney.
