An 18-year-old man was arrested in connection with the Oct. 24 on-campus shooting following a bonfire at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff that injured a juvenile and 18-year-old UAPB freshman.

Derrick Jiner was booked into the W.C. “Dub” Brassell Detention Center at 8:05 p.m. Wednesday. He is accused of criminal conspiracy to commit capital murder, treason or a Class Y felony; aggravated assault/terroristic act; engaging in a continuing criminal gang, organization or enterprise; possessing a handgun on school property; and first-degree battery.

Jiner is not a student at UAPB, according to UAPB Campus Police Lt. Theodore Haase. A probable cause hearing for Jiner will likely be held Friday in Jefferson County District Court.

The 18-year-old freshman was treated for a flesh wound to his left arm and released from Jefferson Regional by Oct. 25, according to Haase. A spokesperson for the victim’s family said he was walking to his car at the Harrold Complex dormitory at 1204 L.A. “Prexy” Davis Drive when he was shot. The shooting happened at about 10:45 p.m., Haase said.

The minor remained hospitalized as of Thursday morning, Haase said.

The bonfire was part of homecoming week activities at UAPB.
