Locals to observe Civitan Awareness month

The Jefferson County Civitan Club will observe April as Civitan Awareness Month with various projects.

At 3 p.m. Saturday, April 2, they will work a concession at the opening game for Challenger League Baseball at Ed Brown Field. They will also sponsor the team party for athletes and families at the last game at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 30.

Saturday, April 9, the Civitan Club will be volunteers at Special Olympics and sponsor the Matthew Featherston Sportsmanship Award. Saturday, April 23, participants will attend the annual area meeting being at Hope.

May is nomination and election of new officers who will attend officer training in June. July 13-16 are dates for the international conference at Norfolk, Virginia, and the Heartland District Conference July 25-26 at Wichita, Kansas.

The local club meets the first Thursday of the month and the board of directors meet the third Thursday of each month. Officers are Angela Thayer, president; Yolanda Whitelow, president-elect; Pam Gardner, secretary; Maudie Anderson, secretary; and Ryan Rush, chaplain.

Civitan is an international organization, established in 1917 in Birmingham, Alabama. The organization of community service clubs has approximately 40,000 members. Each club works to help others and fulfills needs in their communities, with a special emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities.

The Jefferson County Civitan club has been helping others since May 13, 2005, through fundraisers, projects and quarterly dues. Dues are $25 per quarter starting Oct. 1 each year.
