A Keeping It in the Family Sustainable Forestry workshop is set for 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church at Magnolia.
According to a press release from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Human Sciences, topics will include:
• A brief overview of the “Keeping It in the Family” Sustainable Forestry and African-American Land Retention (SFLR) program;
• Selecting the right conservation practices for your timber stand;
• The forestry stewardship program for private landowners;
Independent reporting for Pine Bluff & Jefferson County since 1879.
• Resources available, some through SFLR, for estate planning, wills and resolving heir property issues.
The SFLR program is part of the Keeping It in the Family forest conservation model which is a collaboration of federal, state, local private and community-based organizations to help keep private forestlands in families, the press release said.
“In 1920, African Americans farmers owned 15.6 million acres of farm land nationally. In 2012 African Americans farmers owned 4.6 million acres of farm land nationally,” said Director Henry English of the Small Farm Program at UAPB.
