A rough third quarter Thursday night ended the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff’s upset hopes in women’s basketball.
Jackson State defeated UAPB 76-60 at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center in Jackson, Miss.
The first half featured 10 lead changes as UAPB (3-17, 1-9 SWAC) hung tough with a team which entered the game tied for third in the SWAC. The Lady Lions trailed 17-16 after the first quarter but led for much of the second, at one point going on a 6-0 run to lead 26-21 with 4:47 remaining until halftime.
Jackson State (10-11, 8-2) took over in the final four minutes of the half, finishing the second quarter on a 15-4 run. A 3-pointer by D’Arrah Allen was UAPB’s only field goal during this stretch.
The Lady Tigers kept it going after halftime, outscoring UAPB 22-9 in the third quarter. Jackson State shot 61.5% from the field in the third while holding UAPB to 28.6 percent. UAPB’s offense recovered to score 21 points in the fourth quarter, but the game was already out of reach.
Jackson State guards Taleah Dilworth and Diaka Berete each scored 17 points, as did UAPB guard Jailah Pelly. UAPB guard Kristyna Boyd added 14. JSU shot 50% from the field and made seven 3-pointers.
