Lady Lions fall at South Dakota

A season-worst offensive performance combined with a hot-shooting opponent made for a long Tuesday night for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in women’s basketball.

South Dakota defeated UAPB 73-41 at Sanford Coyote Sports Center in Vermillion, S.D.

UAPB (1-5) shot a season-low 26.9 percent from the field. The Lady Lions tied their season-high with six 3-pointers but shot 7 of 16 from the free throw line. Junior guard Indiya Bowen scored 15 points, but no teammate scored more than 6.

South Dakota (7-0) shot 51 percent from the field, led by senior guard Angelina Robles’ 21 points. Four other Coyotes scored 10 or more.

UAPB led 4-0 before South Dakota went on a 7-0 run for the game’s only lead change. The Lady Lions never had a scoring run longer than 5-0.

The Coyotes led 50-33 after three quarters before dominating the fourth 23-8. The Lady Lions didn’t score in the game’s final 4:29. This was the third straight game in which UAPB was held to single digits in the fourth quarter while allowing 21 or more.

South Dakota outrebounded UAPB 39-25 and dominated paint scoring 30-14.

UAPB has now lost five straight games after winning its season opener at Memphis. The Lady Lions had 25 offensive rebounds in that game but have collected 44 combined in the games since, an average of 8.8 per game. UAPB had nine Tuesday night.
