Melanie Johnson Dumas has announced her candidacy for reelection to the District 7 Justice of the Peace seat on the Jefferson County Quorum Court.

“I have lived in Jefferson County for over 60 years and have served on the quorum court since 2017,” Dumas said in a news release.

“I want to continue working with this legislative body to help keep our county in a stable and sustainable financial position.”

Dumas emphasized the importance of fiscal responsibility within county government.

“We must ensure that every department head stays within the budget they submit to the quorum court for approval,” she said. “By doing so, we can maintain a strong financial foundation that allows Jefferson County to meet its obligations and continue providing essential services.”

Public safety remains a top priority for Dumas, according to the release.

“The citizens of Jefferson County deserve to feel safe and secure,” she added.

“A safe community helps our county flourish and makes Jefferson County more attractive to businesses that can create jobs and strengthen our local economy.”

A lifelong resident of Jefferson County, Dumas is a 1979 graduate of Dollarway High School.

She attended the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and Tuskegee University.

She is an active member of Family Time Baptist Church & Ministries and Adah #424 Order of Eastern Star, PHA.

Dumas is the daughter of the late Dr. Vannette Johnson and the late Delois Davis Johnson. She has three sisters and one daughter, Jesilyn.

The filing period for candidates begins Nov. 3. The primary election is March 3.
