The Tom Joyner Foundation will feature the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff as its School of the Month for September.
As the School of the month, UAPB will use its fund-raising efforts to support the Tom Joyner Scholarship at UAPB, according to a news release.
“We need alumni, faculty, students, local community and everyone who has a desire to help students to give to the school of the month initiative,” said Margaret Martin-Hall, director of Development and Title III. “We ask that all UAPB supporters help by giving and encouraging others to give as well.”
Each month, the Tom Joyner Foundation designates an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) to receive its support. The scholarship support money is sent directly to the HBCU for students. The scholarships are awarded to the students through the financial aid department based on financial need and other requirements from the school and the donor, according to the release.
“Now more than ever, the Tom Joyner Foundation is committed to the future of Historically Black Colleges and Universities because they continue to play an important part of educating our nation’s youth and producing future doctors, lawyers, business executives, scientists and philanthropists,” according to the release.
Independent reporting for Pine Bluff & Jefferson County since 1879.
In 1998, the foundation began giving scholarships to African American students who were in need at HBCUs. The foundation has raised and given away more than $50 million in assistance to thousands of students.
According to the organization, each HBCU selected will provide at least 100 scholarships.
