Jefferson County jailer accused of smuggling attempt

A jailer at the W.C. “Dub” Brassell Detention Center was arrested Saturday morning and is suspected of attempting to smuggle contraband in the Jefferson County jail.

Sheriff’s Maj. John Bean wrote in a news release that investigators with the Tri-County Drug Task Force and Jefferson County sheriff’s office arrested Miakia Ellis, who was the subject of a three-week probe. Ellis was reportedly searched and found to be in possession of approximately 115 grams of suspected marijuana, smoking papers, lighters, a phone charger and cellphones.

Ellis was booked into jail on suspicion of criminal conspiracy, furnishing prohibited articles, possession of a controlled substance (Schedule 6) with purpose to deliver, and criminal use of a communication device. Bean wrote Ellis will appear in district court Monday for a probable cause hearing.

“I cannot be prouder of our investigators who devoted many hours and much effort into solving this case which occurred in our jurisdiction as well as seeking to bring justice to those who commit such crimes,” said Sheriff Lafayette Woods. “Their dedication to duty is not only appreciated but vital to serving the citizens of Jefferson County. I am also thankful for the technology we have obtained and used during this investigation, which was also vital in identifying suspects.”

Woods added his office has a zero-tolerance policy against contraband and will seek the maximum penalty possible for violators.

“The JCSO remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and professionalism in the operation of our detention center and will continue to take decisive action against any violations of our policies or the law,” he said.
