Ivy Center for Education students will take part in their fourth robotics workshop from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, at Faith Presbyterian Church, 913 University Drive.
The robotics program began in 2015 under Sederick C. Rice, director of the Math and Science Pre-College STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Center at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
Cameran Faucette and Carman Wilson from the STEM Center will provide robotics/computer training to the Ivy Center. Students in 7-12th grades are encouraged to attend the session. Parents are always welcome.
“The goal of the training session is to develop VEX robotics teams that can compete on the middle and high school levels. Activities will include integrated robotic builds and programming challenges, core critical thinking training, group-learning and team building activities, and computer programming. The Math and Science Pre-College STEM Center also provides outreach and professional development services to school districts, charter schools, and non-profit organizations,” according to a news release.
The training sessions for the 2017-18 school year are possible through a grant from the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame.
Independent reporting for Pine Bluff & Jefferson County since 1879.
“Funding from this grant, has allowed ICE to purchase VEX Robotics kits to introduce students to robotics and computer programming and help prepare students for future team competitions,” according to the release.
Rice has promoted curiosity and interest in STEM, according to Mattie Collins, president of the Ivy Center.
“We are excited to continue our work with him and his outstanding students this year,” she said.
