A Pine Bluff man who was arrested Friday for allegedly being under the influence of drugs could face a felony charge after he allegedly injured a doctor in the Jefferson Regional Medical Center Emergency Room.
Calvin Young, 37, allegedly grabbed Dr. Janet Curry by the abdomen and pulled her toward him while Curry was attempting to examine Young, Detective Billy Robertson said in a probable cause affidavit presented Tuesday in district court.
According to the affidavit, police were sent at 10:30 a.m. to the area of East 15th Avenue and Georgia Street to investigate a report of a man acting strangely. They made contact with Young, who was allegedly incoherent, was sweating profusely, was difficult to understand and appeared to be under the influence of a narcotic.
Robertson said he went to the scene and Young had to be physically restrained with handcuffs and leg irons to keep him from walking into traffic, and he was taken to the hospital, where he was physically combative with officers and staff while being treated.
According to the affidavit, after Young grabbed Curry, “she screamed for him to let her go,” and received two abrasions to her abdomen as a result of the incident.
Pine Bluff District Judge John Kearney set a $10,000 bond for Young after ruling prosecutors had probable cause to charge him with second-degree battery.
Young was also ordered to have no contact with Curry until the case is settled. He said he would hire his own attorney.
