Honor baseball legends in PB

Editor, The Commercial:

Pine Bluff was formerly the “diamond” of baseball activities in the state of Arkansas. Many deserving men have been recognized for their contributions to amateur baseball in our community. Names like Ed Brown, Charlie Kalkbrenner, Jim Hill, Eddie Bryan and others. Some names are recognized on a plaque at Taylor Field.

Three obvious names missing from those deserving recognition are Bill Campbell, Benny Reed and Robert Browning. These three men were not only contributors to our baseball programs, but they worked voluntarily and tirelessly for more than 40 years in programs involving many sports. In addition they were all members of the Arkansas Officials Association, officiating various high school sports. Bill Campbell officiated the first basketball game ever played in the new Cummins Prison Gym.

On Saturday mornings at the Boys Club you would find Bill, Benny and Robert ready to officiate grammar school football and basketball games. They all worked hard to provide for their families but always found time to help kids in all athletic endeavors, especially baseball.

Bill, Benny and Robert managed and coached Babe Ruth and American Legion ball for many, many years. They enabled some athletes to elevate their skills into the professional level. These men collectively coached in the Babe Ruth World Series in California taking their team to the finals. While teaching and coaching baseball they positively influenced the character of countless young men. They were not known as men of great wealth, but they tremendously enriched the lives of many others with their care, time and knowledge.

Can I get an Amen?
