Home visit by probation officers leads to drug arrests

A home visit by two probation and parole officers Saturday to the home of a man currently on probation led to his arrest and the arrest of a woman on drug-related charges.

Ronald Maxwell, 26, and Caroline Chambers, 41, were taken into custody after they followed officers Lashondra Brown and Rolanda Haynes back to the probation office, Detective Richard McCorvy said in a probable cause affidavit.

According to the affidavit, Brown and Haynes had gone to a house at 116 N. Kansas St., where Maxwell listed as his residence, to conduct a home visit and reportedly saw suspected marijuana in plain sight.

McCorvy said in the affidavit that there was suspected marijuana on a table, and a shoe box under a couch contained 1.9 ounces of suspected marijuana. The officers also reported finding a Crown Royal bag containing more than $2,900 in cash under the couch. Maxwell had an additional $460 cash in his pocket when he was patted down for officer safety.

When Chambers was interviewed, she allegedly said the suspected marijuana on the table was hers, but said she did not know anything about the suspected marijuana that was in the shoe box.

When Maxwell was interviewed, he allegedly said the drugs were not his and then asked for an attorney.

The suspected drugs will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory for analysis.

Pine Bluff District Judge John Kearney set a $10,000 secured bond for Chambers and a $10,000 cash-only bond for Maxwell after ruling prosecutors had probable cause to charge them with possession of a controlled substance with purpose to deliver and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Chambers and Maxwell both said they would hire their own attorneys.
