Home sales, prices up in March

LITTLE ROCK — Home sales in Arkansas were up 1 percent in March compared to a year ago and average prices were up 4.7 percent, the Arkansas Realtors Association reported Thursday.

The association said 2,017 homes sold in the state in March, compared to 1,996 during the same month in 2011, while the average price of a home rose to $146,920, compared to $140,242 a year ago.

During the first quarter of this year, home sales in Arkansas were up 6 percent compared to a year ago, and the average price of those homes was up 3 percent.

“The key word is ‘up,’” said Amy Glover Bryant, spokeswoman for the association. “We are up for the month and up for the year in all categories. This is good news for the Arkansas housing market, for homeowners and for prospective buyers and sellers.”

Pulaski County had the highest number of homes sold in March with 334, followed by Benton County with 322, Washington County with 207, Faulkner County with 111 and Craighead County with 102. Eighty-eight homes were sold in Sebastian County in March and 24 were sold in Jefferson County.

The average home prices for the month were highest in Pulaski County at $180,847, followed by Garland County, $169,060; Crittenden County, $167,619; Benton County, $167,300 and Perry County, $162,833.

The average price of homes in Sebastian County was $124,115 in March. The average price in Jefferson County was $98,595.
