The final 2014/2015 meeting of the 20th Century Club was held recently in the Cafe Court of First Baptist Church. Jenkins Food Service served a delicious lunch of chicken, vegetables, salad, apple pie and ice cream.
After the meal, Ruby Poteet took the group down memory lane as she spoke of the Pine Bluff/Jefferson County Historical Museum. The museum was located in one room at another location when it was opened in 1980, but moved to the restored 1906 Union State Depot at 201 E. Fourth Ave.in 1991.
The depot was built with four rooms, which still exist today. It is listed on the National Register of Historical places. It was the home of at least two restaurants before becoming a museum.
When entering the door, visitors are greeted by the original Little Miss Sunbeam. The next display is Native American, then on to the Delta display, where cotton is king. There is a cotton gin on display. Then visitors journey on to the area devoted to early settlers, scrap quilts, household items, clothing and wedding dresses.
There is a room devoted to members of the different armed services from Civil War to present. There is also a Studebaker wagon given to the museum by a family in Pearcy, Arkansas.
The museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The museum is in need of volunteers. They are also looking for missing Pine Bluff High School yearbooks for the following years: 1929, 1934, 1943, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1982 through 1999, 2000 to present.
