Historic museum director addresses Bess Jenkins Club

The Bess Jenkins Club met recently at the Pine Bluff Country Club where Ramsey Douglas, director of the Pine Bluff/Jefferson County Historic Museum, was the guest speaker.

Continuing the theme of study: “Museums,” Norma Caldwell, program chairwoman, introduced Douglas. She gave an interesting update on the museum.

At the museum, visitors can view the past from the earliest settlements of cotton, lumber and rice plantations to the transportation age and explore post-war commercial growth of local industries. Also, visitors can see the Honors Gallery, paying tribute to those who served the country from Jefferson County, in World War I through Afghanistan.

Douglas indicated the Victorian display is one of her favorites and the display continues to be a favorite of museum visitors.

She invited the members to visit and see the new and positive changes made in the last year. The museum is located in the old train station at 201 E. Fourth Ave.. It’s open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free and donations are welcome.

Also at the Bess Jenkins meeting, President Lela Murray called the meeting to order. Sue Merritt, secretary, called the roll and read the minutes of the last meeting. There were 30 members present. Hostesses were Judy Barrett, JoAnn Clemmons, Bettye Jean Hutt, Barbara Joseph and JoAnn McGeorge.

Tables were decorated with clear glass cylinders filled with red and silver hearts, chocolate candy kisses and chocolate hearts wrapped in red were scattered around the centerpieces.

At the conclusion of the program, the membership was served dessert and coffee.
