High school relics

Editor, The Commercial:

Jack Mayberry recently asked about the Pine Bluff High School photos and trophies — which included a tall, gold-plated cup and a deflated game ball — that used to be displayed in a glass case at the front of McFadden Field House.

Those were all transferred to the Pine Bluff/Jefferson County Historical Museum, located in the old train station at Fourth and State.

Since the pandemic, the museum has only been open on a limited schedule, which was posted on the rear entrance (north side of the building). A lone caretaker came in for just a few mornings a week, according to the posted hours. As I’m only in that area in afternoons, I have not been inside in years.

In years past, the museum had a director and a staff of volunteers who came in and arranged for different events and rotated displays. I have no idea what became of them, or even if that body still exists. (The one at the Arkansas Entertainers Hall of Fame in the Convention Center folded soon after the turn of the century.)

The county judge’s office should have more information on the museum. I hope this helps.
