The Arkansas High School Coaches Association is discontinuing its annual high school all-star games, the Arkansas Activities Association announced Monday.
The AAA released a brief statement saying the AHSCA executive committee had informed the AAA of this decision, citing declining participation from athletes and coaches in recent years.
The AHSCA will continue to release all-star rosters for each sport to recognize athletes and coaches for their achievements despite the lack of games.
The University of Central Arkansas had hosted the events over several days in recent years, culminating Saturday with boys and girls basketball games at the Farris Center and a football game at Estes Stadium.
Last season, Pine Bluff boys basketball coach Billy Dixon was the head coach of the West Boys All-Stars, and graduating Pine Bluff senior Randy Emerson Jr. played on the team. Other Jefferson County and southeast Arkansas athletes and coaches have regularly featured in the various all-star games.
