Guachoya to feature McGehee artist

Guachoya Cultural Art Center at Lake Village will showcase the artwork of Larry Winston of McGehee in February.

The exhibit will open with a reception to meet the artist from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9. The public is invited to attend this free event.

Winston was born at McGehee, the son of a compress worker and stay-at-home mother. At the age of six, he discovered he had the gift to draw, and occasionally he got in trouble for it, a spokesman said.

“I attended Desha Elementary before attending McGehee High School,” Winston said in a news release. “It was there I started thinking about my future. After graduating in 1976, I immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent to Germany in 1976 and remained there until 1979. While there I visited the museums and saw some of the great old masters’ paintings. It was then I bought my first oil painting supplies.”

While in Germany, he attended St. Leo College for a semester. He also attended Pines Vo-Tech at Pine Bluff, studying mechanical drafting, before re-enlisting in the Army in 1982.

“I served until 1989 and soon after I began self-studying the art of oil painting, having returned to McGehee at that time. I began to rediscover my love of the arts. As an artist I find no greater joy than creating something beautiful out of nothing,” he said.

Winston’s exhibit will be open until Feb. 28 at Guachoya Cultural Art Center. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Friday.
