The Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars recently met and donated to the Arkansas Society of the United States Daughters of 1812 Veterans’ Coat Drive Fund. U.S.D. 1812 collects new and nearly new men’s winter coats for central Arkansas veterans.

Arkansas DIW members traveled from Fayetteville, Hot Springs, Hot Springs Village, Stuttgart, Pine Bluff and Little Rock for their semi-annual meeting in Little Rock, according to a news release.

Sheila Beatty, U.S.D. 1812 state president, accepted a donation from Kay Tatum, Daughters of Indian Wars state governor and U.S.D. 1812 chaplain national.

“DIW exists to assist and encourage the preservation of records and historic sites associated with our native and immigrant American ancestors; to cherish the memory of those native and immigrant Americans who waged war and/or committed other acts of hostility together or one against the other in defense of their people’s freedom, liberty and ideals; to strengthen fellowship and to encourage cooperation between descendants of native and immigrant Americans; to foster, in a spirit of patriotism, the support and endorsement of all treaties and laws made and agreed upon between the state and federal governments and the several tribes, bands, and nations of Native Americans; to publish a lineage book of the names and ancestral data of members of the society, and original materials relating to this aspect of American history and promote and support worthy programs and projects of educational benefit to Native American Indians,” according to the release.

Members must prove descendance from an ancestor, either native or immigrant Americans, who engaged in acts, both hostile or passive, with one another. Special recognition is bestowed on members who prove descendance from a native American.
