Grace Willing Workers host cowboy-themed luncheon

Members and guests of Grace Willing Workers Extension Homemakers Club met recently at Centennial Fellowship Church for their monthly meeting and pot luck luncheon.

The room was decorated with a cowboy theme. Several members wore cowboy hats and cowboy accessories. Liz Crosby brought cowboy hats and bandannas for all the members to wear. The hostesses for the luncheon were Brenda Robinson, Delores Kelley and Crosby.

Crosby presented the program, “History of Aprons.” She divided the members into groups. One person from each group showed her favorite apron telling why it was so special to her. Some of the aprons shown were the Hostess Apron, which was usually made out of a daintier fabric such as silk or organdy and used mainly for show. The Chef’s Apron is made in one piece with a straight “skirt” and bib. The Chef’s Apron goes over the head and ties in the back with ties. There were also embellished Half Aprons, an apron that ties around the waist with no bib. They are usually gathered or pleated into a waistband. Other aprons shown were Full Aprons, an apron that covers the whole front of an outfit.

Debbie James, club president, conducted the business session. She announced that the Basket Weaving Workshop, taught by Brenda McKinnon, was a success. Those attending the workshop were James, Connie Herrin, Dixie Fritz, Geneva Gray, Meg Kesl, Crosby, Barbara Stone, Robinson, Kelley, and Linda Murray. James taught a Mini Scrapbook Workshop at the Jefferson County Extension Office. Those attending the county workshop from Grace Willing Workers were James, Herrin, Marjorie Zuber, Murray, Stone, Fritz, Crosby and Nancy Rosen.

Community Service was discussed. Kaye Richardson announced that the club had donated 53 school supply items for the Transformation Project’s School Supply Give-a-Way. The club made plans to cut out cancer hats from old T-shirts when they hostessed at the Southeast Arkansas District Fair.

Bettye Johnson, vice-president, discussed Holiday Foods, which was held Oct. 8 at the First Presbyterian Church. Richardson, Gray, Fritz, Robinson, and Scarlett Chism volunteered to bring centerpieces to the event representing Christmas, thanksgiving, fall, and Halloween.

Rosen, Walk Across Arkansas chairman, announced that Walk Across Arkansas began Oct. 7. A team was formed consisting of Herrin, Zuber, Mary Smith, Kelley, Sabrina Self, Chism, Fritz, Johnson, Rosen and Verdell Baker.

Guests at the meeting were Chism, Peyton Kelley, granddaughter of member Delores Kelley, and Gerry Crutchfield, mother of member Brenda Robinson. Chism was welcomed as a new member.
