There will be only one county-wide race on the November General Election ballot, that for Jefferson County treasurer, and there is only one clear choice for the job: Vonysha Goodwin.
Goodwin has paid her dues as a deputy in the office since 1999, learning the job from current Treasurer Elizabeth Rinchuso, who will be retiring at the end of the year.
“I’m thankful to her and to [Chief Deputy] Tina Roscoe,” Goodwin said in a recent interview with the Commercial. “I’ve had good teachers.”
For those who don’t know, the county treasurer serves as “the bank for Jefferson County.”
The county clerk is responsible for paying the bills for the county, but the treasurer is the one who has to approve the bills, something Goodwin has been involved in for years.
She is opposed by a political newcomer, Republican James Bass, who declined an invitation to meet with an editorial board at the Commercial. Bass made no announcement of his candidacy and was absent at several candidate forums before the March primary.
