General election details released

The Jefferson County clerk’s office issued an announcement on the dates and deadlines regarding the Nov. 5 general election. In addition to this being a presidential election year, local ballots will also include other races or matters for voters to decide.

The candidates who would qualify for the November general election ballot are filing as independent municipal or school board candidates, according to a news release.

Only those who are seeking city or school board positions should file during the July 31-Aug. 7 filing period. (Municipal positions include mayor, city treasurer/recorder and city council member.)

The independent candidates who are seeking justice of the peace, county positions, township positions and district judges positions should have filed during the filing period in November 2023 to qualify for general election ballot.

The schools that will appear on the ballot will be Pine Bluff and Watson Chapel districts. White Hall District appeared on the March primary ballot.

ELECTION-RELATED DATES

JULY 31 (noon) — Filing period begins for independent/municipal candidates and school board candidates for general election ballot.

AUG. 7 (noon) — Deadline to file petitions with signatures and political practice pledge, affidavit of eligibility, notice of candidacy for independent/municipal/school board candidates.

SEPT. 6 — Deadline to make applications for absentee ballots available (applications are available now if requested for the November Election.)

OCT. 7 — Deadline to register to vote in the general election.

OCT. 21 — Early voting held at the county courthouse through Nov. 4. Voting occurs Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

OCT. 21 — First day bearer to pick up a maximum of two absentee ballots.

OCT. 29 — Deadline to receive absentee ballot applications by mail, fax or email.

NOV. 1 — Deadline to receive in-person applications for absentee ballots from the voter, bearer, administrator.

NOV. 1 — Deadline for the voter, bearer, administrator to personally deliver absentee ballots to the county clerk.

NOV. 4 — Deadline to apply to register in the general/annual school runoff election.

NOV. 4 — Last day of early voting: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

NOV. 5 — Election day — Polls will be open 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

NOV. 5 — 7:30 p.m. Deadline for county clerk to receive absentee ballots by mail, physical delivery of agent.

ABSENTEE BALLOT DETAILS

Act 736 prohibits the county clerk from sending unsolicited absentee applications to voters who have not established recent contact to request a new ballot application. All voters who wish to receive an absentee ballot must contact the county clerk’s office.

The Jefferson County clerk’s office has absentee ballot applications available to the public Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. if you would like to vote by mail. You may also visit the website at http://www.jeffersoncountyar.gov/elections-voter-registration to download an application. Voters should mail, fax or scan and email the completed form to the Jefferson County clerk’s office.
