Heading into a rivalry series with championship implications, University of Arkansas at Monticello freshman Camden Tanner was named Great American Conference and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Central Region player of the week.
Tanner, a right fielder from North Little Rock who prepped at Little Rock Catholic, was honored after UAM swept Southwestern Oklahoma State University last weekend. Tanner batted .800 and slugged 1.800 after going 8 of 10 with 3 home runs and a double in the 3-game series, which the Boll Weevils swept. Tanner also was walked twice, intentionally walked once and drove in a run on a sacrifice fly for a .769 on-base percentage.
Tanner drove in 8 runs and scored 4 of his own. He did not strike out.
He is now batting .445 on the season, as UAM (25-20, 21-9 Great American) is tied with Harding University (31-14, 21-9) for second place, a full game behind Arkansas Tech University (32-13, 22-8).
The Weevils will close the regular season with a home conference series against Southern Arkansas University starting at 2 p.m. today and continuing with a doubleheader starting at noon Saturday.
Independent reporting for Pine Bluff & Jefferson County since 1879.
Harding will host Arkansas Tech in its final conference series starting today. A 2-of-3 series win for Harding and UAM sweep of Southern Arkansas would give the Weevils the outright GAC title.
