The Arts and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas announces a fundraiser has begun on Kickstarter to buy drums for youth of the Merrill Community Center at Pine Bluff.
Fund the Drums is a project to raise money to buy the youth more djembe drums (rope-tuned skin-covered goblet drums played with bare hands, originally from West Africa.)
Merrill center youth are collaborating with the arts center in “Drumming Through the Fables,” a theatrical production at the center. The performance began Wednesday and continues at 7 p.m. today through Saturday, July 30.
“Fund the Drums expands after-school programming at a local community center that faces many challenges,” a center spokesman said in a news release. “The drumming program has ignited excitement and engaged participants across generations. Further, the drumming has already resulted in an expanded after-school music program and they need more drums.”
