Fort Smith 188th Wing targeted in Pentagon budget

WASHINGTON — The 188th Fighter Wing in Fort Smith would lose its A-10 mission under the Air Force’s budget plan for the 2013 fiscal year.

The 188th Fighter Wing, based at Fort Smith Regional Airport, has been rumored to be on the chopping block since November. The Air Force on Friday released details of its force structure changes.

At a press conference Friday afternoon Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz said they plan to reduce 102 A-10 aircraft from its fleet, still leaving more than 200 A-10s in the fleet.

The Air Force briefed state adjutant generals on the proposed reductions that will impact guard and reserve units in many states.
