Friends of John H. Johnson Museum and the American Red Cross of Missouri and Arkansas observed the 98th anniversary of the 1927 Mississippi River Flood at Cornerstone Christian Academy in Tillar on April 24.

Stephen Edwards and Joshua Temple, Red Cross community program disaster specialists, shared with students how to prepare for a flood and tips on helping to keep their family flood aware and safe, according to a news release.

Edwards explained the importance of knowing how to prepare.

“A big part of it is preventative measures, preparedness and education,” Edwards said.

He added that people should learn about what floods are, the causes of flooding, the dangers of flooding, the hazards that can come from flooding and how to prepare for floods looking forward.

“The hope is that they will pass it on to their families on how to respond to any future flooding,” Edwards said.

Friends of John H. Johnson Museum donated their book “John Was His Name, The Boy Who Grew Up To Become John H. Johnson.”

A native of Arkansas City, the late Johnson was owner of Johnson Publishing Co. As a child, he lived for six weeks on top of the Arkansas Levee during the 1927 flood.
